Americans and their cars

I didn't realize how very seriously Americans take their cars. On this latest trip (across Pennsylvania), I've listened to a LOT of radio, and heard a LOT of adds. On Ford ads for hybrid, they make sure to point out that a hybrid can help you reduce your nation's reliance on foreign oil. On Hyundai ads, they say AMERICA and AMERICAN really loudly about 15 times to downplay the fact that they're a foreign automarker. And I think it's GM... not sure, but I think it is... they have an ad showing how they employ more Americans than all the foreign automakers combined.

Crazy. I'm not American, so I can't say for sure, but I'm not sure that patriotism would be one of the primary factors in my decision on a car to buy...

It definitely wouldn't be a primary factor for my decision to buy a car, but I know of many people who love certain cars partially because they are American made.

A couple of days ago I saw a truck on the highway with 2 meter long wooden American flags on either side of the bed. There are a lot of intense patriots out there in America.

but really think about it. if you had the choice of buying canadian goods or american goods and it was obvious, which would you choose. sure, if price is way different or the product is entirely different then I wouldn't be as closely connected with the Canadian name, however no question that most americans are seemingly quite patriotic... even if they don't support the gov't, etc (although no excuse there now either!!)

Isn't a more sustainable option to purchase local produce? So is it the same for cars?

Although - american made cars do not reach the environment standards in China...

There are actually different environmental standards in some states. For example, California-made cars are much more environmental than those outside of the state of California. In my opinion, the other standards are pretty low. It makes for an interesting time trying to register your car in California though.

OOPS!

Forgot to edit this: The ACTUAL funny thing is that, after driving this American car till the tank was empty, I went to fill it up, and noticed that right on the gas tank, it very clearly states that Ford recommends British Petroleum.
